Background for surface coating and lacquers

What is Surface coating?
A substance applied to other materials to change the surface properties, such as colour, gloss, resistance to wear or chemical attack, or permeability, without changing the bulk properties.

Lacquer is a fast-drying, hard, high-gloss surface coating. Lacquers are made by dissolving a cellulose derivative and other modifying materials in a solvent and adding pigment if desired. In general, organic coatings are based on a substance, usually a resin, which, after being spread out in a relatively thin film, changes to a solid. This change, called drying, may be due entirely to evaporation (solvent or water), or chemical reaction, or stoving. Opaque materials called pigments, dispersed in the substance, contribute colour, opacity, and increased durability and resistance. Cross linking solvents are added at the time of manufacturing to achieve specific level of performance.

Type of lacquer is selected on shade/ clarity, coating thickness for durability and acetone rubs required which is often based on end product application and customer requirement. Shinex lacquers are suitable for dye or clear coating.

We have developed range of waterbase and Solventbase Electrophoretic, Dip and Spray lacquers for stoving or air drying.

1. Electrophoretic Lacquers
Electrophoretic lacquering is a 'Continuous process after plating' as it could be continuation of electroplating line followed with lacquering tank, which is also described as 'wet on wet' plating process. The Electrophoretic lacquering is an advanced form of lacquering with a simple process using waterbase solutions and with low risk of fire and safer environment. It has excellent throwing power to coat difficult shapes evenly. Metal products coated using this method are artificial jewellery, gift items, door handles, hardware products etc.
